Blepharitis

Inflamed eyelids characterized by red, irritated scaly skin at the edges of the lids. Cause This common eyelid infection is associated with dandruff, allergy, or eczema of the scalp. Ulcerative blepharitis is caused by a bacterial infection. Symptoms Burning and discomfort in the eyes, with flakes or crusts on lashes. Sometimes the surface of the eye may also be inflamed and red, and sometimes even the roots of the eyelashes may be affected. Treatment Scales can be removed with cotton moistened with warm water. The inflammation often recurs, which requires more treatment. Ulcerated eyelids must be treated by a physician, since severe cases can lead to problems with the cornea.
